I remember back in high school reading the newspaper and seeing the bad that games do. I remember reading how people not much younger than I am reenacting in real life what they would see on the television or do in a game. I once read of a guy killing his younger sister by doing the People’s Elbow to her which was a big move in wrestling back then. I also remember reading about a guy who reenacted a hit and run accident killing a woman just as they would have in games such as Grand Theft Auto. I am happy to learn that games such as “Second Life” can indeed help people that we personally can’t help. It is incredible how we can help abused children by using this game to sort of as they say on the website to “break a barrier of socializing.” It seems that they are introduced to people going through the same hardships through this game and can use what they learn to communicate with other people.

Technology Review: How Obama Really Did It

I was surprised to learn what President Barack Obama was able to do by just reading the first page of this document. Using his social networking site www.my.barackobama.com also known as MyBO it was incredible how he made $55 million in donations in a single month! It was said during his campaign that he connected with young Americans. Reading this it just hit me, what better way to get to young Americans than a social networking site? A lot of young Americans are online once or even more every day. I know people that can’t be on the computer without checking their facebook website. They even go online on their phones, check it and even update their status every time they go back on. I remember during President Obama’s campaign and even sometimes after the campaign receiving messages on facebook telling me and many other people where and when President Obama’s speech was going to be and to go out and show him our support.

FRONTLINE: growing up online

Reading the introduction on the PBS website I find myself in two places. I am against children around the ages of 16 and younger reinventing themselves online and think they should be watched more closely but I also think there is good in children using the internet. I am against children reinventing themselves online because I think they should feel good about who they are as a person. They shouldn’t have to reinvent themselves and put up provocative photos for people to like them. Kids are warned everyday about online predators by their parents and know that they are out there. They do know what to avoid. Kids these days know a lot more about the media. They memorize any and everything. I was surprised that my 12 year old brother memorized every word to a song we just heard three days ago. Information is always within your grasp online.
